New York City, NY // The bus, Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), and subway systems in New York City are among the largest in the world, and the New York City subway system has the most stations of any on the planet. According to MTA statistics, over 5 million people rode the subway every day in 2016, meaning the subway transported over 1 billion riders throughout the year. In New York, the MTA operates the subways and city buses, as well as both the Long Island and Staten Island railways. It is a massive transit system that carries millions of people around the world’s largest metropolitan area every day.

While these transportations systems are also among the safest in the world, bus, MTA, and subway accidents can and do still happen. Unfortunately, these accidents can leave passengers with life-changing injuries. In the most catastrophic accidents, passengers are killed, leaving behind grieving family members who don’t always know where to turn for help.

In any bus, MTA, or subway accident, it’s important to work with an experienced bus accident and mass transit accident lawyer. Your lawyer can help protect your legal rights. Because most bus, MTA, and subway accident cases involve a lawsuit against a government entity, there may be notification requirements and strict deadlines for bringing a claim. If you miss these deadlines or fail to observe the notification requirements, you may miss your opportunity to obtain compensation.

Injuries Caused by Bus Accidents

As with any type of motor vehicle accident, a bus accident can be caused by a variety of factors. In many cases, a bus collides with another vehicle. In a city with as many pedestrians as New York City, buses can also strike pedestrians. Depending on the facts of the case, an injury victim may be able to pursue a personal injury claim against one or more individuals or entities.

Bus Operators – In some cases, the bus driver is at fault. There are many reasons why a bus driver could be responsible for a crash. Unfortunately, distracted driving isn’t limited to people behind the wheel of a passenger vehicle. Bus drivers can also become distracted by cell phones, texts, or a passenger on the bus.

MTA or a Bus Company – In other cases, the MTA or a bus company may be responsible for the accident. If the accident was caused by the MTA’s failure to inspect or maintain a bus, or the MTA failed to properly research a driver’s background before hiring them, it may be possible for an injury victim to file a lawsuit against the MTA or the bus company.

Other Drivers – New York City is a busy place, and navigating the streets can make even the most experienced drivers sweat. In a lot of cases, a bus accident is caused by another motorist. In these situations, an accident victim may be able to pursue a claim against a driver whose negligence caused the accident.

Bus accidents can lead to a number of serious and even fatal injuries. Accident victims can suffer burns, broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, and injuries to the neck, spine, and back.

Injuries Caused by Subway Accidents

Anyone who has ever observed a subway train in operation knows how quickly they move and how suddenly they can appear.

Subway accidents can happen due to a variety of reasons, including derailments, rollovers, and sudden stops that violently toss or throw passengers around a subway car.

These accidents can cause a broad range of serious injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and injuries to the back, neck, and spine. When people fall onto subway tracks, they can also suffer amputations.

Because subway accidents tend to involve a lot of victims, they often receive a lot of media attention. These are devastating crashes that change lives forever. In recent years, a number of subway accidents have been caused by subway operators who were either distracted, overtired, or operating at unsafe speeds.

When subway accidents occur, they usually cause catastrophic injuries. Injury victims must adjust to a new way of life, and many are left with lifelong injuries that require costly medical care and treatment.

Obviously, an amputation is among the most life-altering of any type of injury. Although amputations can occur when someone is inside a subway train, these types of accidents tend to happen more often when someone is struck by a subway car.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Surgery, the most common type of amputation caused by subway accidents is a below the knee amputation. The study looked at all amputations related to subway accidents during a period between 1989 and 2003. Researchers discovered that injury victims required several surgeries to treat their injuries. Two patients died due to the severity of their injuries, and one-third of all amputees developed an infection at the site of the amputation.

No matter what type of injury a bus, MTA, or subway accident victim suffers, it’s important for them to get the medical and legal help they need as soon as possible.
