Mass disasters attorney Jonathan C. Reiter discusses the rights of surviving family members of mass disasters.
When someone loses their life as a result of a mass disaster, their surviving family members are typically left with legal challenges in the aftermath. Some face a hard fight in recovering the remains of their loved ones in addition to getting answers to important questions about what occurred. Many have questions about their legal rights and options when they hit a wall in trying to seek answers from government agencies or others in charge of investigating the circumstances of a disaster.
Recently, the families of victims of a ferry disaster in South Korea spoke out in opposition of legislation agreed upon by ruling and opposition party leaders in the country that calls for an more in depth investigation into the incident.

The Sewol ferry capsized and sank in April leaving more than 300 people dead. The government of President Park Geun-hye was widely criticized for how the disaster was handled. A number of survivors and family members of victims believe that there has yet to be a transparent investigation and the agreement on the legislation was a political maneuver.
Many in South Korea continue to press the government for answers about the disaster, which is stated to be the worst maritime disaster the country has seen.
