Ontario County, NY—A detached dump truck bed straddling the New York State Thruway near Manchester in Ontario County, New York caused two automobiles to become involved in separate crashes, consequently resulting in a total of 17 driver and passenger injuries. The series of motor vehicle collisions (MVC) occurred on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 around 4:30 a.m. New York State Police (NYSP) authorities are in the process of determining whether the primary motor vehicle accident, in which the box of the dump truck struck a County Route 7 overpass, disengaged and landed on the roadway, was prompted by a mechanical issue or driver error, reported the DemocratAndChronicle.com.

According to information provided, 49-year-old dump truck operator identified as John Hoey was reported to be driving east on the New York State Thruway, otherwise known as the Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway, when the bed of the dump truck lifted for unknown reasons. Upon doing so, it struck the County Route 7 overpass at mile marker 337 and subsequently detached from the body of the truck, coming to a rest in the roadway. The truck was stopped in the median of the thruway after the incident.

Soon after the initial dump truck accident, 47-year-old motorist Max Itzkowitz, who was traveling in a 2004 Chevrolet passenger van, occupied by two adults and eight children, tried to swerve away from the box but failed to do so. The passenger van “side-swiped” the dump truck’s bed. All of the vehicle’s occupants suffered injuries in the wreck and had to be taken to hospitals in Rochester, New York. Two of the children riding in the vehicle were airlifted via medical helicopter for severe injuries. Moments later, another dump truck box-involved collision occurred, in which a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban sport utility vehicle violently hit the box. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Yosef Compton, two adult passengers and four children, were all injured and required medical attention after the SUV accident. While the extent of the 17 injuries acquired in the series of crashes were undisclosed by NYSP officials, two were allegedly deemed to be critical. The eastbound lanes of the New York Thruway, between exit 43 (Manchester) and exit 42 (Geneva), were closed to motorists for hours, pending preliminary investigations into the injurious motor vehicle accidents. New York State Police deputies are expected to conduct a full probe into the crashes.
